Message from Wally:

Hi fellas and welcome to the 2011 Golf Season. My name is Wally Hawthorn and I will be your new Handicap Chairman for this year. It will be my job to communicate handicap rules to you according to the USGA. A couple of new rules for this year. Handicap postings will change on the 1st and 15th of the month rather than every other Sunday as we have done in the past. This is a mandatory change instituted by the USGA for 2012 but we are going to start the practice this year just to be ready. The Club Computer will be available for posting scores on the first day of posting for this year which will be April 15th. There will also be an opportunity for all men who are 65 years of age or older to participate from the Gold Tees. Our Tournament Director has added 3 additional Tournaments that those 65 and older men can compete in from the gold tees, so take advantage of the opportunity! The slope and rating is correct in our computer for all tees. Remember to post all your scores whether you are practicing or playing a Tournament to produce a true handicap. Re-rating is not part of my job, the computer does that for us based on the scores you post. Best policy to adopt is to post honestly. Afterall, Golf is a game of integrity, if you cheat on your handicap, you are not only cheating your fellow golfers but you are also cheating yourself. Let's practice good Golf Etiqutte, relace your divots, fix ball marks, and rake traps so that everyone gets a fair shake. Thank you and have a great season.

Any questions can be emailed to me at wally-loraine@roadrunner.com

Things to Know:
This page is designed to help you and provide you with information as it relates to the handicap system. You can also access your handicap information on line and print a card via the link ABOVE. Just type in the ID "Deerwood" and view your handicap index and posted scores.
A handicap index compares a players scoring ability to that of a scratch golfer. A handicap index is computed from no more than 20 rounds. A minimum of 5 rounds is needed to get a handicap index. A handicap reflects a players potential because it is based on the best handicap differentials posted.
Course Rating: Is the USGA's determination that indicates the evaluation of the playing difficulty of a course for a scratch golfer under normal conditions based on yardage and other obstacles and is indicated as ex. 72.0
Slope Rating: is a measurement of relative difficulty of a course for players who are not scratch golfers. Each course is rated from each set of tee. i.e. front tees, back tees middle tees. And is expressed as for example 114.
Active Season: Is the period during which scores in a geographical area will be accepted for handicap purposes determined by the authorized golf association. In our area it is the Buffalo District Golf Association. Our season begins 4/15/2011 and ends 10/31/2011. Scores made at a golf course in an area observing an active season even though the golfer is from an inactive area must be posted when scores are accepted in the golfer's home course. i.e. Player A is from Buffalo NY and playing in Florida in January. Any scores in Florida are acceptable and should be recorded at his home course when posting commences.
Playing multiple courses or tees:Your handicap index is portable from course to course. You convert your handicap index to a course index based on the slope rating of the tees played. Most courses have a Course Handicap Table with different slope ratings based on tees played available to help with this conversion.
Posting Scores:
To post an 18 hole score you need a minimum of 13 holes to be played. To post a 9 hole score a minimum of 7 holes need to be played. If you play 7-12 holes you are required to post a 9 hole score.
Posting Scores when a complete round is not played:
If you play 13 holes you are required to post an 18 hole score. For the un-played holes you must record par plus any handicap strokes that you are entitled to receive on un-played holes. Similarly if you play 7 holes then you must post a nine hole score and follow the same for un-played holes, record par plus any handicap that you are entitled to receive for un-played holes.
Nine hole scores will be combined in order to give you an 18 hole score for handicap purposes.
Tournament Scores must be posted with a "T" or check the tournament score box on the computer screen when entering your score. Tournament scores must be you actual score not adjusted scores.
Equitable Stroke Control (ESC):
Is the downward adjustment of individual hole scores for handicap purposes in order to make handicaps more representative of the players ability. When posting scores on our computer hole by hole ESC will be done automatically for you. When posting scores via the express method you are required to enter your gross score and your adjusted ESC score in a separate box. Always post your actual score not you ESC score. The table below illustrates the maximum number of strokes taken on a hole based on your course handicap.
Equitable Stroke Control Table

Posting Start Date:

We will advise when posting period begins for 2011, usually around the first week of April.

Note: For those who want to play the Forward (yellow tees) our computer  is updated with the forward tees information. To find your course handicap take you Handicap Index and use the 104 slope chart to find your corresponding Course Handicap for playing the forward tees. Please beware that the score cards have not been updated with the slope and course rating for the forward tees for men.
